- This section has instructions for the following:
-
-
- +o Running Outbox with the Netscape 1.12 Communications
- server (2.4.1 below).
-
- +o Running Outbox with other releases of the Netscape
- Communications server (2.4.2 below).

- requires a specific configuration of a Web Server to work
- correctly. When the Netscape server is installed on a clean
- system (one not previously running the Netscape server), it
- is automatically configured to run with Outbox. However, to
- prevent breaking older installations of the Netscape server,
- upgrading to Netscape 1.12 will NOT configure the Netscape
- server to work with Outbox. There are two choices for such
- systems:
-
-
- +o Do not do anything. In this case, Outbox will not run.
- This is harmless, your Netscape Communications Server
- 1.12 will continue to work. However, Outbox, webdist,
- WhatsNew and future SGI products relying on a web
- server with a document root of "/var/www/htdocs" will
- not work.
-
- +o Configure the Netscape server to run Outbox. This
- configuration is complex and best accomplished by doing
- a clean install of the Netscape server (instructions
- (2.4.1.1 below)). Doing such an install WILL
- TEMPORARITLY BREAK PREVIOUSLY EXISTING WEBSITES UNTIL
- YOU MIGRATE ALL EXISTING DOCUMENTS TO THE NEW
- CONFIGURATION OF THE NETSCAPE SERVER. Do not do this if
- your server is set up in a multi-hosting configuration
- or if you have relocated the server root.

- _C_o_m_m_u_n_i_c_a_t_i_o_n_s _s_e_r_v_e_r This operation will BREAK PREVIOUSLY
- EXISTING WEB SITES. See the information above before doing
- this.
-
-
- +o Become root by typing "su" (and entering the root
- password if any).
-
- +o In a shell type "versions remove ns_http netsite"
-
- +o In a shell type "rm -r /usr/ns-home/httpd-80/config/"
-
- +o Install the Netscape Communications 1.12 server using
- swmgr(1) or inst(1).

- _s_e_r_v_e_r Running outbox with other releases of the Netscape
- server is no longer supported. Silicon Graphics recommends
- that you upgrade to the Netscape Communicastion 1.12
- Server. However, if you wish to configure your Netscape

- server to conform, you may do so using the information
- provided below on how Outbox can be made to run with other
- servers.
-
-
- 2.5 _R_u_n_n_i_n_g__w_i_t_h__O_t_h_e_r__S_e_r_v_e_r_s
-
- Outbox can run with any HTTP/1.0 compliant web server that
- supports CGI-BIN, server parsed HTML and User Directory
- mappings. If you are running a different web server, other
- than the Netscape Servers from SGI, SGI recommends that you
- upgrade to the server shipped with Outbox and migrate your
- documents to it. To do this see the information below
- (2.5.1).
-
-
- While this is not a supported configuration, you may also
- choose to configure your web server to run Outbox. To do
- this, see the information below (2.5.2).
-
-
- 2.5.1 _M_i_g_r_a_t_i_n_g__d_o_c_u_m_e_n_t_s__f_r_o_m__o_t_h_e_r__w_e_b__s_e_r_v_e_r_s_: The
- Outbox webserver runs with a document root of
- /var/www/htdocs, a cgi-bin directory of /var/www/cgi-bin and
- with user directory of "public_html". You may migrate your
- documents to run with this configuration. Consult the
- documentation of your exisiting Web Server to understand the
- requirements for your existing documents.
-
-
- 2.5.2 _R_u_n_n_i_n_g__w_i_t_h__a__d_i_f_f_e_r_e_n_t__w_e_b__s_e_r_v_e_r If you are
- running a different web server, consult its documentation to
- configure it such that it has a document root of
- /var/www/htdocs, a cgi-bin directory of /var/www/cgi-bin and
- a user directory of "public_html". You must also turn on
- server-parsed HTML for all HTML files (.html suffix) if it
- is turned off.
-
-
- Note: This is not a supported configuration.
-
-
- 2.6 _T_o__t_u_r_n__o_f_f__O_u_t_b_o_x_:
-
- To turn outbox off, for example on a secure system, follow
- the following instructions:
-
-
- 1. Open a shell window by choosing "Unix Shell" from the
- Desktop toolchest.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - 4 -
-
-
-
- 2. Log in as root by typing "su" at the shell prompt. Type
- in the root password if you have one.
-
- 3. Type "chkconfig outbox off" and reboot your machine.
-
-
- 2.7 _S_e_c_u_r_i_t_y__C_o_n_s_i_d_e_r_a_t_i_o_n_s_:
-
- The Outbox and webserver products have the following
- security implications:
-
-
- +o Installation creates a directory with mode 777 (read,
- write and execute priviledge to all users). This
- directory is "/var/www/htdocs". You can change the
- permissions on this directory to be more restrictive.
-
- +o Information about the users, machine configuration and
- some user files are accessible to others on the same
- network. You can stop this by disabling Outbox
- completely. To do this follow the instructions below:
-
-
- 1. Log in as root by typing "su" at the shell prompt. Type
- in the root password if you have one.
-
-
- 2. Type "chkconfig outbox off" and reboot your machine.
